Staying on Track in Life2023-02-05

Is it hard? Not if you have the right attitudes. It is having the right attitudes that’s hard.

Robert Persig, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Life satisfaction is dependent on life success, but is also influenced by mental health and by addictions. If you mind works well and you are addictions-free, it is easy to enjoy life, do the right things, and build success.

The challenge is that a vast and underappreciated number of people suffer from mental health issues, and an even greater number from addiction problems. Those numbers in and of themselves are not the problem, almost everybody suffers at one time or another from physical health issues, for example. The real problem is that mental health and addictions are hidden due to stigma, poorly diagnosed, and inadequately treated.

Acknowledging there is a problem and seeking help is the first step. People would be more willing to do that if mental health and addictions were addressed front and center in primary care settings. Primary care clinicians would be more willing to address them if they felt they had adequate tools to assess people and guide them to the right treatments.

We hope that the digital tool we developed will lead to easier assessment of patients at home and at the time of their primary care appointment, and that the blood tests we developed can be added to routine labs, to help match people to the right treatments. There is no health without mental health.
