Each culture and religion have their own traditions. They are important for comfort in the face of adversities, to retain unity, and provide a framework to approach the world. Christmas is such a tradition.
The basic premise and reasons for the celebration are well known: the birth of Jesus. It comes at a time of the year when nights are long, it is colder, and people are more depressed. It brings people together, and lifts spirits up.
Let’s not forget the real purpose, under a wave of commercialism. The greatest gifts we can give others are love and kindness.
