The Future is Prevention2025-05-19

Prevention is better than cure.

Desiderius Erasmus

It is becoming increasingly obvious that in medicine in general, and psychiatry in particular, we will be moving away in the near future from treating illness in the hospital to preventing it at home. A key part of that will be preventive blood testing, at home digital monitoring, and comprehensive bio-socio-psychological life improvement strategies.

After treating an acute episode, we do rehab for reintegration in daily life, but that should be followed by prehab-building resilience so when future stressors and adverse events occur, they do not lead to another clinical episode.

It is likely that the health and wellness of the future will be managed in super-gyms rather than clinics. Where diagnostic testing, imaging, and counseling can be added to the usual mix of exercise, nutrition, socializing, and education.

We are doing our part to enable patients and families to take care of their preventive health, by annual blood tests to identify and mitigate risk, before it becomes a clinical problem. Prevention is better (and actually cheaper) than treating illness and having your life disrupted- for the individual, their family, and society.
