Invest in Your Mental Health2025-07-07
“Mens sana in corpore sano (a healthy mind in a healthy body).”
—Juvenal
Everything in our lives is downstream of the mind. Reality in perceived through the mind. Decisions are made in the mind. Behaviors are initiated in the mind. Your life satisfaction is computed in the mind. Addictions hijack the mind.
Taking control of and optimizing the mind do not have to be complicated and dramatic. You can do little things every day that help and add up. Eat a Mediterranean diet. Walk in nature. Sleep well. Keep in touch with supportive people. Tackle one task a day that is urgent and important, set things in motion if even for 5 minutes. Then tackle another one that is not urgent but important, if even for 5 minutes, again set things in motion. These two actions do wonders for reducing your stress and boosting the meaning in your life.
If you are stuck and affected by mental health issues, or want to prevent future ones, there is help. Talking to and enlisting trusted family members, friends, coaches, therapists, and prescribers are all options. Biological tests, digital checklists, and supportive apps can all help bring efficacy and effectiveness to a field that, until recently, has been shrouded in stigma, misconceptions, and imprecision (see for example https://mindxsciences.com/).
In the end, having a fit body and a fit mind are the ultimate status symbols.
